It is very important that you hire plenty of employees. Not having adequate staff simply sets you up for failure, because criminals find it easier to steal from stores that have few employees. The more employees you have working, the better all parts of your store can be watched. In addition, instruct your staff members to say hello to every customer who comes through your doors. Criminals do not like to be noticed, and the greeting may make them nervous enough to change their minds about stealing from you.
Another great policy to have is bag checks. If customers bring bags into the store, do not hesitate to check them. It is easy for a criminal to put unpaid-for merchandise into a bag from another store. Also, check any large items that a customer brings to the cash register to purchase; he could have hidden smaller items inside.
Price tag switching is another trick that shoplifters use. They will put a cheaper price on an item and then attempt to buy it for the wrong price. If a price looks wrong to you, be sure to double check before finalizing the transaction.
To avoid the risk of customers putting additional items into their shopping bags after they have checked out, implement a policy of stapling bags closed after purchase. This will make it much more difficult for them to steal from you.
